Organic or Not? Check the Label

Organic or Not? Check the Label

Thank you for being here….let’s get started. The first blog is all about Ingredients and Reading labels. If you are like me, you pay attention to what you put in your body but you have taken the labels word for it on your skincare products and trusted that Organic…..meant Organic! That is what I thought any way. It was not until I received an email from EWG (Environmental Working Group) http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ with a list of the carcinogens lurking in my skin and body products. Boy, was I surprised to find out that my “organic” and not inexpensive, skin care products contained all kinds of stuff I did not want to rub into my skin. YIKES!!! There began my quest…..
I highly recommend you do what I did and have your products with you while you are in front of a computer and click on the link on this blog….you will be able to look up the ingredients on the products you currently own and see for yourself what hormone disrupting carcinogens you are ingesting through the pores on your body. That is a good start, but there is more to reading labels. It is important for you to see what the key ingredients are in your product by looking at the way they are listed on the ingredients label of your product. Here is an actual ingredient list for a very expensive and popular skin care line….this one is for Vitamin C, E and Ferulic Acid –
aqua / water / eau, ethoxydiglycol, ascorbic acid, glycerin, propylene glycol, laureth-23, phenoxyethanol, tocopherol, triethanolamine, ferulic acid, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate

Water is usually always one of the first ingredients listed although hydrosols can be used to instead or with water to enhance the benefits of the product for the user. The next main ingredient i ethoxydiglycol, which is diethylene glycol monethyl ether, a cosmetic grade solvent . If you put the chemical in the EWG database it has a rating of 1 which is good but mostly because information is limited on the long term effects. My point is this….you are putting more solvent on your skin then Vitamin C. The Vitamin C is the next ingredient which is great but then it is followed by propolene glycol, laureth -23 (both rated 3 on EWG) and then phenoxyethanol that has a rating of 4……followed by the Vitamin E –Yay! Then triethanolamine that is rated 5….finally the ferulic acid along with two other good ingredients. This product costs $165 for 1 ounce!!! You are paying an awful lot of money to have mostly chemicals slathered on your face that are possible and known carcinogens.

It is important to note that whenever you have water in a product, you do need to have a preservative and it also necessary to have and emulsifier to mix water and oil. Purely Splendid uses ECO-certified preservatives and emulsifiers. ECO- certification is the European standard since unfortunately, here in the US there is very little restrictions and virtually no regulations on what can go into your cosmetics and skincare products. It is BUYER BEWARE!

We all know people that are getting or have gotten some type of cancer or auto immune disease…..it is happening at an alarming rate. We live n very toxic environment and you cannot control everything. However, you can control what you put on your body as well as in your body. It is worth the time and effort. BE INFORMED!!! That is our greatest weapon to fight the onslaught of chemicals surrounding us.
